Danny Pichney Collection
These plugs are part of one of the last and perhaps largest
remaining collection of original, authentic new in package Danny
Pichney wood lures. Danny Pichney is one of the greatest
plugmaker legends in the entire history of surf and striped bass
fishing.
Working in wood, Danny Pichney's craftsmanship is akin to
Americana folk art collectibles. Each lure normally displays
manufacturing, finishing and natural blemishes in the wood. These
small manufacturing and natural marks enhance the feel and appeal
of the lure, making it more like custom-crafted fishing folk art
rather than having the look of mass-produced commercial items.
There are nineteen models and eighty-four unique color/model
instances in this collection. At least a dozen more models and
other paint patterns by Danny are not part of this particular
collection.
Information specific to the models in this collection, and how
to fish with them and other trivia about them can
be read here, including points of interest, some history and
tips how best to use each model. It is a living document, meaning
new material is still being added as time permits.
All are a minimum of twenty to
twenty-five years old more or less. All are new in package.
A few packages were opened for the first time ever to take these
photos of each lure. Otherwise, all have never been taken out of
the original packages that Danny sealed them in. All have
original, authentic through-wires, grommets, swivels, lips,
hooks, bucktail and finishes put on by Danny Pichney. No
modifications or usage has been made of any of these lures. All
are "as made" by Danny Pichney. They've never been out
of the original package or touched by any hands but Danny's
(except to take photos). No oxidation on metal parts. No
blemishes except the distinctive marks made by the plugmaker.
Danny Pichney put decal eyes on approximately ten percent of
this collection. When the craftsman (Danny) was in a rush (height
of the season) or wanted to get a new batch of plugs onto the
beach quick, he often did not put any eyes on. And in much of his
later period, Danny tended not to stick on eyes. In usage, the
decal eyes often washed off within a few casts to a few trips
anyway. I never felt any indication from bass that eyes ever
mattered to them. Eyes are an embellishment for us, the consumer.
To us (not the bass) they complete the illusion of life. This
sounds odd, but you can equate it to a baby doll toy with no
eyes... would you buy one for a small child? So eyes on plugs
were there merely to appease us in the buying process. As Danny
perhaps may have felt (due to his diminished use of eyes over
time), no one can say pretty plug eyes ever mattered to a bass.
