Weighted hooks like these were first used for soft plastic toads. Originally, the need was to rig soft plastic toads to make them weedless plus add ballast below the belly in order to keep toads from twirling, flipping over or torquing to one side as the toads were dragged and gurgled across the water's surface. Today, these hooks have become all the rage for soft swimbaits. The added stability the keel-like weight produces during the retrieve, plus the extra wide gaps makes them the ideal hook for swimbaits. But don't stop there! These weighted hooks are the most modern and advantageous way to rig most any soft bait. Practically any soft bait will work with these weighted hooks. You may use a wide variety of small to large soft baits by varying the hook size from 3/0 to a massive 8/0. You may fish shallow or deep by varying the weight used from 1/8 to 3/8 oz. They're streamlined to fish in and around cover, and the tapered weight shape makes it especially effective in grass.
Mustad's premium #91768BLN UltraPoint is featured in these weighted hooks designed for rigging soft plastic baits. Added Action and Increased Vibration. With many soft baits, the weight on this hook improves the bait's action and increases its vibration. The keel-like weight helps produce a wobbling fall and a rocking retrieve. You can think of the movement, action and vibration the weight produces as a separate lure element in addition to the bait itself. Just as the blade on a spinnerbait produces action and vibration in the lure, so too can the weight on this hook produce action and vibration in the attached lure. Of course, it's not as active as a spinnerbait blade, but the concept is similar in that the weight is a separate element that can add action, movement and vibration to many soft baits. The shape and position of the weight is the real beauty of it all. When allowed to fall on the drop, the weight will swagger and sway as it falls, causing the attached soft bait to wiggle and waver in a swimming motion as it falls. There's nothing too magical about the rig when you retrieve it steadily, it comes in straight. But pause and let it fall on a slack line, or let it pendulum swing in toward you on a semi-tight line - without reeling - and the shank weight starts swinging and swaying, thereby rocking the attached bait back and forth like a baby in a cradle. Clip-on Stainless Steel Wire Corkscrew Keepers. Provide the means to keep soft baits attached. Simply clip the corkscrew onto the hook eye and screw the bait's nose onto it. Then Texas rig the hook point into the bait. The corkscrew will hold your soft baits in place much better, your baits will be able come through rougher cover without pulling down or balling on the hook. Some of my favorite baits to use with the weighted 4/0 include Yamamoto's 5-inch Hula Grub, the 5-inch Yamamoto Senko or Swim Senko, 6-1/2-inch Yamamoto Kut Tail Worms, soft craws - or try any soft bait you may otherwise rig with a 4/0 hook.
Slender, more supple baits like Yamamoto Senkos, Swim Senkos and Kut Tail Worms will shake and shimmy even with the lighter 1/8 and 3/16oz shank weight hooks.
With these hooks (due to the holding power of the clip), you'll be able to add a whole new dimension to your weightless Yamamoto Senko fishing - you'll be able to impart aggressive action to a Senko by working it hard and fast like a soft plastic jerkbait. Due to the softness of a Senko, it's been impossible up to now as a Senko will tear and ball up without the wire corkscrew keeper to hold the Senko in place when aggressive action is imparted. There are times bass want this hard, fast ripping action, even splashing and skipping frantically as fast as you can reel it across the surface with the rod tip up in a topwater presentation. But even on your typical slow Senko presentations, the wire corkscrew will hold your Senko in place much better, your Senko will be able to come through rougher cover without balling up, will last longer, and you'll tend to catch more fish on each Senko (or any soft bait). Give it a try! With baits that have tail action of their own - like Yamamoto's Swim Senko - the tail action will cause the hook weight to swing back and forth on a steady retrieve - and the weight will rock the bait back and forth when the retrieve is paused and the bait falls.

Weighted hooks like these originally became important and were first perfected a few years back for soft plastic toads in order to churn them across the surface in thick grassy shallows. The weight imporves castability and keeps the toad from spinning or flipping over.
As the swimbait craze broke loose, these same styles of weighted wide gap hooks have proven ideal for swimbaits too!
